ABOUT SONIC FEVER
SONIC FEVER is a music project about giving and connecting during this worldwide CoronaVirus Pandemic. Musician and Producer Sally Grayson started writing songs about this time and for this time, and for each song she wrote, she has invited different musicians from around the world with whom she has never worked together, to collaborate on her songs. "Of course, all of us can give and help by staying at home to flatten the curve, but as I asked myself, ‘what else I can I do?,’ the first thing that always comes up in me is the desire to use my gifts to help make this world a better place“, says Sally Grayson. And she had an idea: "So I decided to start writing songs that I hope will help a little to get us through this pandemic and bring hope in these times.“ “I also sensed a great need to connect with people (be it digitally) more than ever because of all of the social distancing and isolation. So for each song I write, I’m incorporating different musicians I’ve never worked with before who also don’t know each other. In each song, I want at least one of the musicians to invite someone who I do not know as a positive metaphor for spreading a virus. ABOUT THE SONGS
NOW
This wild indie exploration of how to live and breathe in the moment in the midst of chaos features Elise Trouw on drums, Weasel Walter (Lydia Lunch) on guitar, Arno Jordan on guitar and J. Fyn Marko on synths. The song and video tell a story of how we can avoid anxiety about an unknown future by practicing presence in the here and now.
Interconnected
“Interconnected” was joined by Gemma Clarke (JW Paris, Ex-drummer Babyshambles), Josefine Jonsson, Tom Lattimer (Eat the Evidence) and David Griffin (New Secret Weapon, Gaolbyrd). “Interconnected” was mixed and mastered by Arno Jordon of Castle Studios.
The Solidary Song
The Contributing musicians on “The Solidary Song” are bassist Dominik Kraemer (The Voice of Germany band, Sing meinen Song band, Gregor Meyle) drummer Lukas Berg (Lokee, Roosevelt, Maxim, Raashan Ahmad) guitarist Philip Breidenbach (Charlotte Haesen, Stefanie Heinzmann, Maxim) and cellist Joy Stuhr (The Radiance, The Musical Ambassadors). The song was mixed and mastered by Arno Jordan from Castle Studios in Dresden, Germany.
Digital We are
The first song in SONIC FEVER is about the celebration of technology during this time, and that although we are physically separate, we have the wonderful tool of the internet, and it should be used to reach out to those we love. The song is called “Digital We Are” and features Mikey Elfers (Thirst Things First, The Killigans) from Lincoln, Nebraska on drums, Tommy Rehbein (Robsapien, Justin Courtney Pierre, Farewell Continental) from Minneapolis, Minnesota on guitar and Travis Collins (A.M.Stryker, We Are the Willows and Deleter) on bass also from Minneapolis, Minnesota.

POST-PUNKIFIED AMERICANA N' ROLL
Sally Grayson has traveled on many kinds of roads. Raised on a small farm on the shores of Lake Michigan, she could see the faint outline of Chicago in the distance - the visual spark for a lifelong case of wanderlust. Early country Americana wafted from the family’s garage radio, spiritual music that eventually crossfaded into her own tastes of rock n’ roll and punk.
Grayson was interested in music and art from a young age, but also had a strong passion for those in need and social justice. She eventually traveled to Delhi, India to care for the poorest of the poor. Creating music and art was interwoven into her travels, documenting and expressing it all.
After relocating to Germany, Grayson started Black Swift, named after a bird that nests on high cliff faces. They released their critically acclaimed debut, “The World Howls” in 2014. Grayson’s own nest moved back to the countryside to raise her family, surrounded by vineyards and with a faint view of the Stuttgart TV Tower.
In 2016 her performances on Balcony TV, her TEDx Talk on “Howling for Hope: “The Importance of Catharsis” and The Voice of Germany were beamed out from that tower. When her Voice coaches (Michi & Smudo from German group Die Fantastischen Vier) asked Grayson what her goal was, she said, “I want to help change the world through music.”
We hear this in the songs of “SEE ME HUMAN.” Grayson explains the backdrop: “I believe what this world needs so desperately right now is for us to stop and really look at each other. To see the other person first as a fellow human being worthy of love and value, the same as us, and to listen to them: what is their story, their history, what motivates them to make the decisions they make?”
“These actions help break the cycles of racism, discrimination and violence. This process is the heart of many of the songs. I realize these are high ideals, and that music can’t immediately change the world, but I believe it can inspire people and be a catalyst for change.”
Black Swift’s lineup has changed over time, with Grayson as the steady songwriting core. “SEE ME HUMAN” features longtime member David Arzt (Jumbo Jet) on guitar, Bertram Oeler (Carver) on bass, and Zar Monta Cola (Warm Graves, The Hug, Jumbo Jet) back on drums.
Black Swift continues to integrate diverse musical styles into their sound, with songs on “SEE ME HUMAN” ranging from post-punk to desert rock to psychedelic ballads. They travelled to Dresden to record at Castle Rohrsdorf, with Arno Jordan engineering. Gabriel Sullivan (XIXA, Giant Sand) from Dust & Stones Recording Studio in Tucson, AZ mixed the record.
Sally Grayson hat schon viel gesehen und erlebt. Geboren und aufgewachsen auf einem kleinen Bauernhof am Ufer des Lake Michigan, konnte sie die schwache Umrisse von Chicago in der Ferne sehen – schon damals begann die Sehnsucht nach der Ferne. Country-Americana wehte aus der Garagenradio der Familie, und eine Art spirituelle Musik, die schließlich in Rock-N'Roll und-Punk für Sally überging. Grayson interessierte sich schon im jungen Alter für Musik und Kunst, hatte aber auch eine starke Leidenschaft für die Bedürftigen und wollte für die soziale Gerechtigkeit kmpfen. Nach dem Umzug nach Deutschland, gründete Sally Grayson ihre eigene Band „Black Swift“, benannt nach einem Vogel, der auf hohen, steilen Klippen sein Nest baut. Die Kritiker feierten das Debüt "The World Howls", welches im Jahr 2014 veröffentlicht wurde.
Im Jahr 2016 dann hatte sie diverse Auftritte und Shows wie zum Beispiel auf Balcony TV, ihr viel beachteter TED x Talk "Die Bedeutung der Katharsis ". Einem breiterem Publikum wurde sie „THE VOICE of Germany” 2016 vorgestellt, wo sie im Team Fanta bis zu den Live Shows dabei war. Als Michi und Smudo von den Fantastischen Vier, Sally fragten, was ihr persönliches Ziel sei, meinte sie: "Ich will mit Musik die Welt verändern." Und das nimmt man ihr mit jedem Wort ab!
Man kann es auf dem neuen Album "SEE ME HUMAN" spüren. Grayson erklärt, "Ich glaube, was diese Welt heute dringend braucht, ist das wir kurz innehalten, uns umschauen und uns des anderen annehmen. Den anderen als das anzusehen was er ist: ein Mensch, der es Wert ist geliebt zu werden, genauso wie wir geliebt werden wollen. Und es ist unglaublich wichtig dem anderen zuzuhören: Was ist die Geschichte des Menschen gegenüber, was hat ihn dazu motiviert, die Entscheidungen so zu treffen wie er es tat. Diese Lebenseinstellung hilft aus dem dunklen Kreis von Rassismus, Diskriminierung und Gewalt zu durchbrechen.“
Dieser Ansatz oder nennen wir es Philosophie ist das Kernstück bzw. Herz vieler Lieder auf dem neuen Album. „Ich weiß, dass dies hoch gesteckte Ideale sind und dass Musik die Welt nicht sofort verändern kann, aber ich glaube, es kann Menschen begeistern und vielleicht ist es ein Katalysator für Veränderung."
Über die Jahre hat sich die Zusammensetzung der Band leicht verändert. Sally Grayson ist als Sängerin und Songwriterin der beständige Kern der Band. An "SEE ME HUMAN" haben unter anderem das langjährige Mitglied David Arzt (Jumbo Jet) an der Gitarre, Bertram Oeler (Carver) am Bass und Zar Monta Cola (Jennifer Rostock, Warm Graves, Jumbo Jet) am Schlagzeug mitgewirkt.

About the Songs
Think of a dark place of your life. The valley you’ve had to walk through, the desert you’ve had to crawl through. What do you wish that you had at that time? The songs on the upcoming Black Swift EP are to help you through the valley. They are songs about that waiting time – the time where the questions are at the forefront and the answers seem far away. They are songs about the dangers of bitterness sneaking in the process of going through challenging circumstances. They are songs about that desire to be filled, the desire to be drenched with rain when you’re parched in the desert. They are songs of encouragement to tell you to keep moving on, to face hardships yet not to fall into despair and a reminder that this time shall pass.
About the Production
Building amps from transistor radios, tracking vocals through headphones, playing guitar through a light bulb, or a tape machine, or a Leslie….these were some of the things that you’ll hear on Black Swift’s new EP “Desert Rain.” </span><span>In 2018, Arno from Castle Rohrsdorf (where they record our last album, ‘SEE ME HUMAN’) approached Black Swift to ask if they would like to be the band for the recording workshop lead by one of the top female producers of our time, Sylvia Massy. Working alongside a long list of musicians she has worked with from Tool, System of a Down, Johnny Cash, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Prince, the Melvins, Foo Fighters and many more. So back in September, Black Swift headed to the Castle. And for the first two days, they were the band Sylvia was recording for her workshop. 20 producers and engineers from all over Europe filled the control room observing Sylvia and her magic.
About the Music
Musically, Black Swift traveled to the desert. Many of the bands Black Swift and the leading front, Sally Grayson has been inspired by over the last years are from desert regions: Calexico, XIXA, Queens of the Stone Age, Bombino, Tinariwen…. All these bands carry with them a certain “desert” sound and quality.
Grayson, hailing from Michigan and Minnesota, and now in southern Germany with her German band is far from the desert, but she somehow felt a connection with these hot, dry, lonely and beautiful sounds, and has felt a need to cling on to them.
Part of the connection for her, personally, has to do with the spaghetti western part of the desert sounds. These sounds drum up that nostalgic homesickness in me. Grayson tells, “On Sundays, I’d sit with my Dad on the sofa and watch Westerns. I can still hear “Rawhide” and Morricone’s lonely harmonicas sing in the soundtracks.”
Black Swift’s Album “The World Howls,” ranges in style from Tarantino road trip Rock to Morricone, to Fugazi to Tom Waits. Together with her collaborators Black Swift worked steadily on this album for over a year. The bones of the song were written by Grayson, but the rest has come from a variety of musicians who helped arrange and record in numerous places in America and Germany. “The World Howls” features Jerome Fontamillas (Switchfoot), Beverly Fre$h, Nate Lehner (The Guilty Wanted), Burkhard Mayer-Anderson, Mike Gunther (Mike Gunther & his Restless Souls), Jayathi Kyle (Black Audience), Stefanie Haecker and more. Of all her collaborators, her most consistent on this album are co-producer David Arzt (Jumbo Jet) who played and arranged on most of the songs on the album, Steffen Eifert (Same Same Here) on drums, and Tobias Unrath on bass. From energetic post-punk indie rock to epic dark ballads, to soul infused & blues influenced story telling, “The World Howls” stretches the gamet of songwriting and soundscapes.
